Disavowed is the twenty-second short by Wingless Films, and the fourth to be shot in Dartmoor. Directed by Jim Elton, the film stars Tom Menary as a man on the run from the "scalphunters" across the moors.
On the run. In the wilderness. Can't look back. The scalphunters are coming.
And one bullet left.
Disavowed is a short by Wingless Films, shot in Dartmoor. Directed by Jim Elton and starring Tom Menary, it follows a man hunted by unseen adversaries across a desolate landscape—until a final decision made under an old footbridge. Props were supplied by Robin Manford, and the original score was created by Tom Menary.
The film begins with a black screen, under which can be heard the sounds of someone running through undergrowth, heavy breathing, and finally three gunshots. The wanted man dashes into view, holstering a gun and running into a forest. Pursued by an unidentified antagonist, the man flees towards an old, stone bridge, under which he takes shelter.
Pausing for breath, he checks his clip, to find he has only one bullet remaining. Knowing his pursuer is coming, he wrestles with a terrible choice, which he apparently decides by bringing the gun up to his own head. The image cuts out, but fades in moments later to find the man has not yet pulled the trigger. He lowers the gun, and strides off determinedly. Climbing to the top of the bridge, he aims his gun off-screen, preparing for a last showdown with his foe.

The film was shot in one day on Dartmoor. The opening shots were filmed close to Burrator Reservoir, while the climactic scenes were located around a foot bridge close to Princetown—a location recently featured (at the time of filming) in the second series of James May's Man Lab.
For the shot of the wanted man being watched by his pursuer, Tom Menary stood in for both characters, and the two takes were edited together to form a single shot. Additional sound recording was conducted in Scott Building, to compensate for strong winds during the footbridge scenes.
